An unexpected visit is a comically melodramatic story about a chance encounter with a past lover. Told through two channels installed as a diptych (one showing the protagonist, and the other showing his point of view) the nameless protagonist wears a full-body, green-screen suit, the past lover is a haphazardly computer-generated avatar with no emotion, and the voice-over narration is a melancholic robot voice with a stiffness that satirizes the histrionic text. The visible chroma key character embodies the invisible, it is what is not supposed to be seen; but its emotional insight is universal. The contrast between the physical green screen character and the computer-generated being stresses the contrived nature of digital depictions and the odd ways in which computers allow us to manufacture a self outside of our physical being.

Magdalena Penitente is a short video portrait about the transformation from physical being to icon. Deeply rooted in a religious iconography tradition, the human form transcends its ephemerality in order to become an image, a sculpture.
The power of image-making was the driving force of Christian conversion in colonial conquest. Although female deities held the highest position in fervent adoration across the globe long, the Christian Marian cult devoted to the Virgin Mary, mother of Christ, established an eternal female role model.
Within this tradition, Mary Magdelene represents the metamorphosis from sinner to saint, the focus shifts from physical pleasure to spiritual bliss. In Magdalena Penitente, the image reflected or projected becomes more alive than the present body, and the icon takes over.
